Archaeological monitoring carried out during the restoration of Carker House revealed the remains of an earlier building incorporated into the fabric of the 18th-century country house. This earlier building 'was identified only at ground-floor level in the rear portion of the house…measured c. 12.8m long (east-west) by 7.75m wide and appears to represent the remains of a 17th-century structure, possibly a fortified house (Sherlock 2006, 42).
