House

St. John’s monastery (WX025-004001-) was a possession of St. Thomas’ Augustinian abbey in Dublin and at the Suppression in 1541-2 when it possessed three carucates or townlands (White 1943, 44-5). The land passed through various owners in the late 16th century, including Sir Henry Wallop after 1595 (Gwynn and Hadcock 1970, 175), but in 1641 a thousand acres in St. John’s was owned by Sir Gerard Lowther, a Protestant, including a ‘faire stone house’, described as in disrepair in 1654 (Simington 1953, 224), which may be the house attached to the W of St. John’s House, an early 19th century mansion. Situated in the valley of the N-S Slaney valley, with the river c. 100m to the E. A house of two storeys and three bays has a large fireplace on the ground floor and a blocked fireplace on the first. One of the upper floor windows is a narrow early 18th century form with a sash window of two by three panes over two by three panes. The joists for the ceiling and the roof appear to be original. The cropmark of what is probably a rectangular garden associated with the house (WX026-004003-) is in the field immediately to the S.
