What is recorded here

According to the Civil Survey (1654-6) the land at 'Nickolstowne' was owned by 'Richard Keatinge of Nickolstowne, Esqr Irish Papist' in 1640 and 'Upon the sd lands stands a Castle, the walls of a house within a bawne' (Simington 1931, vol. 1, 317). Located on the edge of limestone outcrop with a sharp drop immediately to E, in pasture, is the bawn (TS082-043002-) which the Civil Survey suggests enclosed a house as well as Nicholastown Castle (TS082-043001-). Both the bawn and part of the tower house still survive but there is no visible trace above ground of the house which is unlocated within the bawn.
