The townland of Castlewilder was formerly known as Clyduff or ‘Cleduffe alias Cartroncleycheeny’ and formed part of the estate lands of Barry Castle (LF023-076----) that were granted to Gerald McRory Farrall in 1622 (Cal. pat. rolls Ire., Jas I). The 1659 census lists Mathew Wilder as the owner of these lands during the mid-17th century. A Matthew Wilder acted as a commissioner for the county between 1697 and 1699 and Edward Wilder was a soldier in the 1649 Irish Confederate Wars, which suggests the presence of 17th-century house (www.buildingsofireland.ie, Reg. 13402321, last accessed 20 July 2012). However, its precise location has not been identified. ‘Castlewilder’ house, which dates to the 18th century, may have been built on or close to its site.
