House

House, fortified house

What is recorded here

Maurice Eustace built a large fortified house south of Harristown castle in the second quarter of the 17th century, but Cromwellians under Hewson destroyed it. The family rebuilt elsewhere a mile to the southwest in 1662, abandoning the first site and its extensive formal gardens. No visible trace remains, yet the loss explains why the newer house exists and why the old ground disappeared from memory.
According to Bradley et al (1986 vol. 2, 178), Maurice Eustace is credited with building a large house S of Harristown castle (KD024-028003-) in the second quarter of the 17th century, which was subsequently destroyed by Cromwellians under Hewson (Tickell 1946-63, 310, 316, 319). No visible surface trace survives. Extensive formal gardens (KD029-038002-) were probably associated with this house which was apparently rebuilt in 1662 on a new site c. 1 mile to the SW.
