What is recorded here
In Rathcrogue, County Carlow, a sub-oval house with nine postholes and a five-and-a-half-metre diameter stood among pits and burnt earth. Charred alder in one posthole dates the structure to roughly 977-802 BC, while Late Neolithic or Early Bronze Age pottery sherds suggest the place remained useful across generations. The road later cut through this old settlement, but the holes still mark where people lived, fired, and forgot.
Excavated in advance of construction of the N9/N10 Kilcullen-Waterford Road (Excavation Licence number E2591, Site B, area 2, 'structure A'). A cluster of 9 postholes, 4 possible postholes and two pits created a sub-oval shape (diam 5.5m). A number of postholes contained charcoal one of which produced a radiocarbon date of BC 977-802 from charred alder. Pottery sherds from the Late Neolithic or Early Bronze Age were recovered from the postholes. A number of other pits and 2 burnt spreads were discovered in the vicinity of the possible structure. Found immediately to W of possible Neolithic House (see also CW007-138----). (Doyle T. 2009, 26)
