An hotel representing an integral component of the built heritage of Westport with the architectural value of the composition, a 'singularly large and noble establishment…built and furnished at the private expense of [Howe Peter Browne (1788-1845), second Marquess of Sligo]' (Parliamentary Gazetteer of Ireland 1846 III, 521), confirmed by such attributes as the pseudo-Palladian plan form centred on a pillared portico not only demonstrating good quality workmanship, but also recalling the customs official's house (extant 1838) in Westport Quay (see 31211041); and the diminishing in scale of the openings on each floor producing a graduated visual impression. Having been well maintained, the elementary form and massing survive intact together with substantial quantities of the original or sympathetically replicated fabric, both to the exterior and to the interior where contemporary joinery; Classical-style chimneypieces; and decorative plasterwork enrichments, all highlight the artistic potential of the composition. Furthermore, an adjacent coach house-cum-stable outbuilding (extant 1838) continues to contribute positively to the group and setting values of an hotel making a pleasing visual statement overlooking the canalised Westport or Carrowbeg River.
