Holy Well

In factory car park, c. 1km to N of Clonmel. A triangular bullaun stone (L 3m to N; L 2.9m to SE; L 2.2m to SW) (max. H 0.7m) of limestone rock outcrop with natural fissures. It is depicted on the 2nd (1906) ed. OS 6-inch map as a 'Holy Well'. The main water-filled depression is circular (diam. 0.3m; D 0.5m) and occurs on the elevated S corner with another small, circular depression (diam. 0.15m; D 0.03m) on highest point, adjacent to the N. Four other circular depressions (diam. 0.17m; D 0.1m and diam. 0.12m; D 0.025m at W and dims. 0.15m N-S; 0.13m E-W; D 0.05m and diam. 0.06m; D 0.02m at E) are aligned c. E-W, along the lower portions of the gently sloping N side of the outcrop. The bullaun stone is incorporated into a landscaped area defined by a low, modern stone wall. Likely dating to the early medieval period, the bullaun stone may have been used for ritual or Christian purposes, such as the preparation of holy water. Local holy wells and associated stones often feature in folklore as sites of healing or spiritual significance.
