What is recorded here

This well is located just off the Croghan road on the south side of the Croghan hill. It is currently located in an area of overspill of slurry. The well is now housed in a small concrete house 1m cubed. The water level is approx. 2m below the surface. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Offaly' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). The Holy Well at Cannakill is traditionally associated with Saint Cianan, an early Irish monk and founder of several monastic sites in the region. It was historically visited for its supposed curative properties, particularly for skin ailments and general well-being, with pilgrims often making offerings of coins or cloth.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
