Hearth in Cooladine

Identified in centre-line testing (E4110) in advance of the M11 Gorey to Enniscorthy road scheme and set aside for resolution as Cooladine 2 (Hardy et al. 2010, 8). It is situated on an undulating landscape sloping down to the W where a small S-N stream is c. 120m distant. A hearth was excavated (E4162) by Y. Whitty as a sub-oval area (dims 2.1m x 1.4m; T 0.4m) with seven layers representing two phases of activity separated by a layer of stones. An oval pit (dims 4.2m x 2.26m; D 0.6m) was 17m to the S, and three smaller pits (dims 0.6m x 0.4m; D 0.12m: 0.9m x 0.88m; D 0.25m: 1.16m x 0.9m; D 0.58m) were 4-12m from the large pit. A single piece of flint and three sherds of prehistoric pottery were recovered from the pits. The Neolithic structure (WX026-083001-) is c. 180m to the S. (Hardy 2012; Whitty 2013).
