Harristown Bridge

Two-arch rubble stone road bridge over river, c.1875, probably incorporating fabric of earlier bridge, pre-1840, on site. Remains of unpainted rendered walls over random rubble stone construction with rendered triangular cut-water to central pier having rendered coping, rendered outer piers over random rubble stone construction, and rendered rounded coping to parapets. Pair of segmental arches with red brick (header course) voussoirs, and rubble stone soffits having traces of render over. Sited spanning Pollanassa River with grass banks to river.

Forming an elegant landmark rising above the Pollanassa River a well-composed modest-scale bridge probably incorporates the fabric of an earlier crossing indicated on archival editions of the Ordnance Survey, thereby representing the civil engineering achievements of two periods in the nineteenth century. Red brick accents embellishing the gracefully-profiled arches introduce a subtle sense of polychromy to an otherwise austere bridge exhibiting a traditional construction in locally-sourced rubble stone.
