What is recorded here

Four hundred and thirty people lie tangled beneath King Street, their bones stripped of identity before burial. The land belonged to St Mary's abbey from 1213, yet the dead never received individual graves or marked rests. They were dumped like rubble, reduced to a pile of bones rather than persons. Even death could not give them back their names.

Test excavations in 1999 at 189-194 King Street uncovered a burial ground containing a large quantity of disarticulated human remains. This is located in an area known as Abbey Green in 1558 and apppears to be part of the the land granted to St Mary's abbey by the city in 1213. Approximately 430 articulated human remains were excavated and recorded (Nelis 2000, 71-2).
