Graveyard in Stacumny

Graveyard

What is recorded here

Seven hundred and twenty-eight people slept beneath Stacumny House before the yard and outbuildings covered them. The graveyard remained active from roughly 1120 to 1275, yet the church that gave it shape never showed itself. Forgetting is not the same as losing; it is only a room waiting for someone to remember the door.
Associated with a possible church site (KD011-021----) and overlain by the yard and outbuildings of Stacumny House. In 1997, an area of some 1055 square metres was archaeologically excavated (Licence No. 97E0119: www.excavations.ie) in advance of a private development. An extensive graveyard containing 728 inhumations, which was in use between c. 1120 and c. 1275, was found but the location of the church was not identified.
