What is recorded here

Gravedan in Rathedan, County Carlow, appears on the 1839 map as a square graveyard with a central church. The church still leaves traces behind, but the boundary has vanished into grass and memory. Perhaps people stopped fencing the dead when they stopped fearing what might enter.

Depicted on the 1839 OS '6-inch map' as a square area (map dims. c. 30m x 30m) with church (CW016-012001-) in centre. Traces of church survive but no visible trace of an enclosed area around it were found when inspected by ASI in July 1987. Compiled by: Claire Breen Date of upload: 19 August 2011
