Graveslab in Ballypheasan was a large flat stone in the west end of the Dominican church, bearing a worn prayer for John Hynde and his wife Martin H, a skull and crossbones, and the year 16 something. It turned death into a cheerful household joke about God’s will and pleasure, yet the slab has vanished, leaving only the strange tenderness of that lost inscription.

The 17th century graveslab of John Hynde that was recorded by FitzGerald (1892-4, 357) as at the W end of the Dominican church (RO039-055001-) is now missing. It is described as: In the west end of the abbey is a large slab lying flat, with an inscription in relief; it commences nearly half way down the stone, and is very hard to decipher, being much worn: GODS WILL AND PLEASURE / IS OVR IOY ….URE / PRAY FOR THE SOULS OF IOHN / HYNDE AND …. MARTEN H / IS WIFE WHO CAVSED THIS TO . MB TO BE MADE ANN / 16 Below the inscription is a large skull and cross-bones with Memento More in relief below them and on either side an IHS and a wheel-like object.
