Graveslab in Ardmulchan

A broken graveslab (dims 1.89m x 0.83m; T 0.13, 0.18m) in the chancel of Ardmulchan church (ME025-020----) is now completely plain but had an incised gothic inscription in English referring to Porter of Kingstown. It is described (FitzGerald 1910, 134) as: One (slab) is quite plain, except for a line and a half of an inscription at its upper end. Unfortunately the left top corner of the lab is broken off, and with it a part of the inscription, which is barely visible to the naked eye. The lettering is in sunk black letter, and (what is very unusual with that class of lettering) in English; it reads (in gothic lettering): [This st]one pertainethe to porter [ of] kingestoune. The inscription was not continued further, though it is plain that it is unfinished. Kingstown is the name of a townland close by. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 11 September, 2014
