What is recorded here
Grave Yard in County Cork remains a wedge-shaped burial ground inside an ancient ecclesiastical enclosure, still touched by life though grass and forgetting have taken much of it. It marks the lost parish church of Kilquane, already ruined when the seventeenth century began, and that disappearance gives the place its quiet weight. People may have kept coming here long after the building vanished, carrying grief into a landscape that no longer displayed the church but still belonged to it.
In NE quadrant of early ecclesiastical enclosure (CO064-026001-), wedge-shaped graveyard enclosed by earthen bank. Partially overgrown; in occasional use. On 1842 OS 6-inch map 'site of church' (CO064-026003-) marked to N of centre; no visible surface trace. Site of ancient parish church of Kilquane; according to Power (1923, 178) 'a complete ruin at beginning of seventeenth century....it consisted of nave and chancel'.
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 2: East and South Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1994). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
