Graveyard

What is recorded here

Square shaped graveyard enclosed by a stone wall with monumental gateway of 19th century date along S side of graveyard wall. Wall footings of a medieval church (OF010-035002-) situated on top of high ground in the centre of the graveyard. The graveyard contains 18th and 19th century memorials. An archaeological assessment at Green Lane, Daingean, including testing under licence no. 04E1439 was required as part of the planning schedule for a single-house development adjacent to an enclosure (SMR 10:35). No archaeological deposits were uncovered as part of the testing; however, the boundary hedge may form part of a large enclosure surrounding the graveyard. John Purcell, 17 Balmoral Terrace, Dillon's Cross, Cork. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Offaly' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 23 May 2011
