Glen House

Detached three-bay two-storey farmhouse, extant 1885, on a T-shaped plan with single-bay (single-bay deep) full-height central return (west). Occupied, 1911. Renovated, ----. Replacement hipped slate roof on a T-shaped plan centred on hipped slate roof (west) with lichen-covered clay ridge tiles, paired red brick Running bond central chimney stacks having stepped capping, and uPVC rainwater goods on box eaves. Part creeper- or ivy-covered replacement gritdashed roughcast walls bellcast over rendered plinth. Segmental-headed central door opening with cut-granite step threshold, timber mullions supporting timber transom, and concealed dressings framing timber panelled double doors having sidelights on panelled risers below fanlight. Square-headed window openings with cut-granite sills, and concealed dressings framing replacement uPVC casement windows. Set back from road in landscaped grounds with cut-granite monolithic piers to perimeter supporting flat iron double gates.

A farmhouse erected by Solomon Richards (1819-86; Bassett 1885, 389) representing an integral component of the later nineteenth-century domestic built heritage of north County Wexford with the architectural value of the composition, one rooted firmly in the prevailing late Georgian fashion, suggested by such attributes as the compact plan form centred on a restrained doorcase showing a simple radial fanlight; and the diminishing in scale of the openings on each floor producing a graduated visual impression. Having been well maintained, the elementary form and massing survive intact together with quantities of the original fabric, both to the exterior and to the interior: the introduction of replacement fittings to most of the openings, however, has not had a beneficial impact on the character or integrity of the composition. Furthermore, adjacent outbuildings (extant 1840) continue to contribute positively to the group and setting values of a self-contained ensemble having long-standing connections with the Richards family including Sheppard Richards (1854-1917), 'Farmer late of Glynn [sic] County Wexford' (Calendars of Wills and Administrations 1917, 667); and Albert "Bert" Solomon John Richards (1893-1956).
