Gallaun

Standing stone

What is recorded here

Gallaun is a tall standing stone in Glanleam, County Kerry, trapped inside a much younger fort named for Cromwell. The prehistoric upright predates the surrounding earthwork by millennia, forcing the later builders either to honour the old marker or to ignore it entirely. A leaning slab now braces the stone after Chatterton found it shaking in 1839, proving that even ancient things need occasional human help to remain vertical.
In farmyard with good view in every direction. Sub-rectangular stone aligned NE-SW (H 1.35m; 1.22m x 0.64m). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
