Gallaun

Standing stone

What is recorded here

Gallaun is a tall standing stone in Glanleam, County Kerry, caught inside a much younger fort called Cromwell's Fort. The stone predates that fort by millennia, so the boundary was drawn around an older presence rather than the other way round. Its base is packed with stones, and a long slab leans against one face, perhaps added after a visitor in 1839 found it easy to shake. It still stands, steady in pasture, carrying two ages at once.
In pasture atop hillock. Rectangular stone aligned NE-SW (H 1.18m; 0.75m x 0.52m). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
