What is recorded here

No one knows which hands moved the Gallaun stone or whether it marked a border, a burial or a warning. It stood beside a small grave and faced a levelled enclosure, suggesting that the terrace was once busy with people who needed a visible anchor in the landscape. The stone has disappeared, but its name still points to the exact place where human life interrupted the quiet hill.

There is no visible trace of this standing stone, marked as ‘Gallaun’ on the OS maps. It was located on a small terrace, E of a slight rise called ‘Knockaunbane’ and almost 120m N of a stone row (KE091-015003-). It is noted in the OSNB as ‘another Gullane and a small grave close to it’ (Templeno, 25). Immediately at W is a levelled univallate enclosure (KE091-111----).
