Gallaun

Standing stone

What is recorded here

Gallaun is a 3.43-metre stone standing inside Cromwell's Fort on the Iveragh Peninsula, yet it predates that fort by millennia. A leaning slab now braces its base, perhaps added after Chatterton found it shaking in 1839. The fort either claimed the ancient stone or merely covered it, forcing both histories to share one narrow patch of Kerry earth.
For descriptive account see O'Sullivan and Sheehan (1996, 52, no. 112, '…a slab which measures .6m high and 1.3m x .45m at base…'). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Kerry. Volume I: South-West Kerry' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 30 May 2011
