Standing stone

What is recorded here

In pasture. Pair of stones depicted and named 'Dallauns' on 1842 OS 6-inch map. Single stone (H 1.4m; 1.2m x 0.8m) survives, roughly rectangular in shape. Hartnett (1939, 52) recorded second stone (H 18ins) 11ft to W. Ringbarrow (CO060-106001-) in same field a short distance to W. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Likely dating to the Bronze Age, the standing stone may have served a ritual or territorial function. The name "Gallán" and local references to "Dallauns" suggest a possible link to early Christian or folk traditions, though its original prehistoric meaning remains unclear.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
