Gallan

Standing stone

What is recorded here

Gallan stands two metres tall in open pasture, leaning slightly toward Rosscarbery with twenty-four cup-marks carved into its west face. Someone sat beside it, perhaps marking days or drawing others into a circle, while the stone watched the coast change around it. It is not a monument to a single event but a companion for patience, still present in the grass and light.
In level pasture, overlooking Rosscarbery to WNW. Rectangular stone (H 1.98m; 1.43m x 0.37m); long axis NE-SW. Twenty-four cup-marks, including one cup-and-circle, on NW face. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
