What is recorded here

Roughly oval graveyard (c. 80m E-W; c. 60m N-S) surrounding St. Multose church (CO112-03405-), enclosed by high stone wall; however 1842 OS 6-inch map shows graveyard largely unenclosed. Gate has 'fine piers of channelled ashlar' (Garner 1980, 13) of late 18th century date with 'particularly handsome' wrought-iron gates. Contains many 'dog-kennel' mausoleums; one large early 18th century mausoleum with ' cornice, cemented walls and slated roof' (ibid). Grave slab on Webb vault near S wall dated 1582 (Darling 1895, 29); altar tomb against S wall dated 1670 (ibid, 41); numerous other vaults, chest tombs and uninscribed headstones. In occasional use. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 2: East and South Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1994). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
