Fulacht fia in Stag Park

This fulacht fia was excavated in 2004 in advance of the construction of the N8 Mitchelstown relief road. It consisted of a low mound (19.2m x 15.4m; H c. 0.2m) of heat-shattered stones and charcoal-enriched soil. Beneath the N end of the mound a rectangular trough (2.02m x 1.45m; D 0.65m) was found. Eight stake-holes found in the corners of the trough suggest that it was timber-lined originally. A pit (4.15m x 1.45m; D 0.57m) surrounded by 25 stake-holes and three post-holes was found to the S of the trough. It contained no burnt stones suggesting that it had been infilled prior to the build up of the mound. The NW end of the pit was truncated by a second pit (1.9m x 1.55m; D 0.35m). This fulacht fia was radiocarbon-dated to the early Bronze Age (cal. BC 2122-1828 (UB-6718)). A second fulacht fia (CO019-169----) which lay 5m to the NW was also excavated.
