Fulacht fia in Moygara

In damp, rush-grown pasture, located on the S bank of a stream/field drain that flows E through a small valley. A field bank borders the N edge of the stream/field drain. Low, roughly D-shaped mound (8.5m N−S; c. 13m E−W), visible as a green, grassy rise in a dense sea of rushes. It is cut on its straight side at N by the roughly E-W field drain (Wth 1.2m at top, 0.6m at base; D 1.3m below top of mound). The mound is low profile; it is highest along its N edge where it borders the stream/drain, grading down gently from there to S where it barely rises above surrounding ground level. Another field ditch (Wth c. 1m), on a NE−SW axis, cuts through the E half of the mound, expanding to c. 2m in width at NE, close to the point at which it intersects with the E−W stream/drain. It is possible that this expanded area incorporates part of an original trough hollow. This portion of the burnt mound is denuded of sod and eroded, revealing a concentration of angular stone fragments in black, charcoal-rich soil.
