Fulacht fia in Liscahane

Fulacht fia

What is recorded here

Hot stones threw screaming steam into the Cork sky, heating water for food or bodies until the basin cooled. Broker measured the abandoned site in 1937 as rivalising a small fort, yet people had forgotten where the stones lay on Mrs. Daniel O'Sullivan's land. The loss is not empty; it is a room whose door handle has broken off, leaving behind heat, hunger and the shape of forgotten hands.
Broker (1937, 16) recorded a fulacht fiadh on Mrs. Daniel O'Sullivan's land 'as big as a small fort but not so high'. Exact location not known. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
