Fulacht fia in Gurteenard

Fulacht fia

What is recorded here

In pasture. Grass-covered spread of burnt material (22m E-W; 9m N-S). Visible as soilmark in aerial photograph (GSIAP, R721). Site visited in 1976 when field was ploughed and as well as fulacht fiadh, two low parallel earthen banks (long axis NW-SE) (CO023-124----) and other 'ill-defined surface variations' at right angles to them were noted to S and SW of fulacht fiadh (UCC). Earthen banks apparently levelled since 1976 and only slight undulations (on NE-SW axis) noted in field. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
