Fulacht fia in Gortknockaneroe

Fulacht fia

What is recorded here

Two fulachta fiadh still hold their shape on C. Daly's land, sitting three hundred yards southwest of the fort. Bowman marked them in 1934, but the exact stones have slipped from modern sight. They may have steamed meat for warriors or eased aching muscles after hardship. Water and heat repeated there until the earth itself remembered the work.
One of two fulachta fiadh (10927) recorded by Bowman (1934, 191) on C. Daly's land: both described as 'c. 300 yds. S.W. of fort' (probably 12550). Exact location not known. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
