What is recorded here

Doneraile Court still casts its shadow over the Awbeg River, where a thirty-metre scar of burnt earth waits beneath the grass. Men digging a walkway in 1990 broke through centuries of silence to touch stones heated by human hands. The river has drowned much of the truth, yet the heat remains trapped inside the rock.
On E side of Awbeg River, in demesne of Doneraile Court. Discovered in 1990 during construction of riverside walkway. Much disturbed spread of burnt material (L c. 30m; Wth c. 10m). Truncated timber (L 0.5m; Wth 0.18m; T 0.06m) found close by. Late medieval timber (see 14304) found close by to N. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
