Caherduggan Castle (Site of) — Report the wrong picture

Caherduggan Castle vanished completely from the south-facing slope, leaving no wall, stone or shadow behind. The Barry family held the land before the Roches took it in the later Middle Ages, but human memory stretched further back. A person born in 1824 still remembered seeing the old castle remains, proving the structure stayed visible long after maps stopped drawing it. The quarry immediately south now swallows the land where that memory stood.

On S-facing slope with quarry immediately to S. No visible surface trace of castle. Originally a Barry holding (MacCotter and Nicholls 1996, 208), Caherduggan became a possession of the Roches in the later Middle Ages (Ó Murchadha 1985, 134). Down Survey (1655-6) barony map shows castle here with mill to S and there are traditions relating to a settlement (CO025-153----) here; according to Grove White (1905-25, vol. 2, 11), person born in 1824 'remembered to have seen the remains of the old castle'. Both 1905 and 1937 OS 6-inch maps show site of castle in middle of field but 1842 OS 6-inch map appears to show castle c. 120m to ESE, c. 10m W of road. Originally a Barry holding, Caherduggan Castle came under the control of the Roche family in the later Middle Ages. It is remembered as part of the historical territorial shifts in medieval Munster, reflecting the influence of prominent Anglo-Norman families in the region.
