Fulacht fia in Coolawaleen

Fulacht fia

What is recorded here

Thirty yards south of the fort wall, hot stones waited in a shallow pit, ready to throw water into rolling steam. Men may have stripped venison, boiled eggs or warmed hands after a cold hunt. The pit marked a place where raw nature became food, warmth and life.
One of two fulachta fiadh (CO023-202---) recorded by Bowman (1934, 33) on M. O'Connell's land; described as 'c. 20 yards south of fort' (probably CO024-114---). Exact location not known. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
