Fulacht fia in Commons North

On semi-karst very damp ground in rough pasture, at the N end of a damp rush-covered area with some periodic surface water and land rising to the N. On the 1897 25-inch OS plan a spring is marked just to the NE. Indicated on a Geological Survey of Ireland map, and also reported by Tom Coffey (SMR map). Listed as one of several ‘Fulachta fiadh’ in the RMP (1996) under the number (CL010-101----). This fulacht fia comprises a grass-covered subcircular mound (5m E-W; 4m N-S; max. H 0.5m) with burnt material evident. During an inspection in 1999 it was noted that the mound was being gradually washed away by periodic flooding. There are three fulachta fia nearby: one (CL010-101003-) lies 9m to the ENE; another (CL010-101002-) lies c. 17m to the E; and a large fulacht fia (CL010-101----) lies c. 30m to the E.
