Fulacht fia in Carrickaready

Situated in the valley of the N-S Mahon River, with the steam c. 200m to the W and a small hillock rising just to the W between the monument and the river. It was first identified as a burnt srpead (site 1) by C. Moloney (2006) in testing (06E0163) on the line of a water pipe, and subsequently excavated (06E0282) by J. Wren. A mound of burnt stone material (dims. 10.4m N-S; 7.2m E-W) overlay an earth-cut pit (diam. 1.74m; D 0.8m). Two shallow oval pits 3.4m E of the trough pit may have been hearths.
