Fulacht fia in Ballyellin

Situated in a slight fold on a W-facing slope, with the N-S Clonough River c. 600m to the W. It was excavated (E3510) as site 52 during 2005 in advance of the building of the N11 Arklow - Gorey bypass. An irregularly-shaped mound of burnt stone (dims. 4.6m x 2.7m; T 0.2m) overlay a rectangular trough (dims. 2.2m N-S; 0.7m E-W; D 0.2m). Just to the SE there was a pit (dims. 1.98m x 0.7m; D 0.38m) that may have been another trough or a tree-bole. There was also evidence of the palaeo-channel (Wth 4-5m; D 0.4m) of a stream. Fulacht fia (WX003-047001-) and the excavated features (WX003-047002-) are c. 120m to the WSW, and the enclosure (WX003-049----) excavated during 2010 is c. 40m to the SE.
