Castle and manor at Ballynowe, probably Newtown, belonged to Mathew Forde in 1641 and stretched across six hundred acres in Inch parish. Whether the castle stood apart from the house or hid inside the house remains unknown, giving the place a ghostly gap at its heart. Forde may have lived there with servants, horses and guests, while the castle watched the fields from a distance no one has marked since.

The castle and manor house (WX003-004----) of Ballynowe, which is probably Newtown, were owned by Mathew Forde in 1641, according to the Civil Survey (1654-56) (Smington 1953, 11). Mathew owned 600 acres in Inch parish at Ballynowe, Cullgrenie (Coolgreany) and the unknown Cullnesmuttane. The castle, if it is a distinct structure from the house, remains unlocated.
