Fulacht fia in Ballyellin

Situated in a slight fold on a W-facing slope, with the N-S Clonough River c. 400m to the W. It was excavated (E3509) as site 51 during 2005 in advance of the building of the N11 Arklow - Gorey bypass. A horseshoe-shaped mound of burnt stone (dims. 6m N-S; 3.1m E-WT 0.2m) overlay a rectangular trough (dims. 3.14m E-W; 2.15m; D 0.1m). There was a pit (dims. 0.7m x 0.6m; D 0.2m) and a number of tree-holes pre-dating the fulacht fia were also recorded as well as a palaeo-channel (Wth 0.5m; D 0.5m; L 7m) of a stream. There is a cluster of features (WX003-047002-) c. 20m to the SW and fulacht fia (WX003-048----) is c. 120m to the ENE. (Martin 2008, 395-6) Compiled by: Michael Moore Dat of upload: 14 February, 2012
