Clear water, hot stones, hungry people: the fulacht fia cooked or cleaned without wasting fuel. In An Choill Mhór the mound still lies like a forgotten kettle, 12.4m long and nearly two metres high, its west edge braced by stones that stood before some of them fell. Perhaps children skipped along the collapsed stones while adults waited for the water to stop shaking.

(j) Fulacht Fiadh: An irregular, but vaguely kidney-shaped, grass-grown mound of burnt and fire-shattered stones measuring 12.4m NW-SE x 1.75m in maximum height. The depression at its WSW side appears to have been revetted with stones, some of which stand upright and some of which have now collapsed. (Fig. 17) The above description is derived from J.
