Friars Garden

Located in deciduous woodland on the N side of Inishkeen Island (max. dims c. 800m WNW-ESE; c. 200m NNE-SSW), close to the N shore of Lough Melvin. An enclosure (dims c. 240m WNW-ESE; c. 50-60m NNE-SSW) is described in italic lettering on the 1909 ed. of the OS 6-inch map as the ‘Friars Garden’. This is defined by a collapsed rubble bank, best preserved at the E end (Wth 3m; H 0.5-1m), and slag was found on the shore at N in the 1940s (SMR file). The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Leitrim' compiled by Michael J. Moore (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2003). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
