What is recorded here
Detached three-bay two-storey house, built c. 1910, with gabled entrance breakfront having chamfered corners. Two-storey return to rear, with two-storey additions to re-entrant corner. Pitched slate roof to main block and flat roofs to additions, with painted rendered chimneystacks. Painted rendered walls with decorative terracotta frieze to eaves of façade and terracotta panel to upper gable of breakfront, with terracotta floral motifs to junction with walling. Round-headed window openings to south elevation, square-headed elsewhere, with painted stone sills, having ornate render surrounds to first floor end bays of façade, with decorative terracotta keystones. Two-over-two pane timber sliding sash windows to façade, double to ground floor, and one-over-one pane to chamfers of breakfront. Internal timber shutters to ground floor windows. Mainly replacement uPVC and some one-over-one pane timber sliding sash windows to rear. Square-headed door opening with timber panelled door having overlight. Site bounded by painted rendered walls with spear-headed railings and square-profile piers with ornate caps. Set back slightly from the road.
This modest-sized house is notable for its liberal use of ornamentation and presents an unusual façade to the streetscape of Charleville. The varied and interesting decorative elements such as the chamfered corners to the breakfront, and terracotta frieze with festoons and flower motifs add interest and textural variance to the otherwise regular form of the house. The retention of timber sash windows and panelled door further enhance the building, as do the decorative cast-iron railings.
