Fort (in Ruins)

On grassy island just separated from SE corner of Dursey Island by narrow gorge; sod-covered remains of two rectangular buildings within a rectangular enclosure (23m N-S; 31.3m E-W). Garrisoned by O'Sullivan Beare in 1602 but taken by Carew before the fall of Dunboy (Healy 1988, 196). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Built or garrisoned by the O'Sullivan Beare clan in the early 17th century, likely during the Williamite War in Ireland. The fort is remembered for its strategic location on a remote island and its association with the resistance against English forces.
