Former Killoughcarran Burial Ground

Burial ground

What is recorded here

Killoughcarran Burial Ground is gone. What remains is a low south-facing slope in County Donegal, dressed in rough pasture and memory. Davies recorded an oval enclosure and a few headstones, but no trace survived. The dead may have been ordinary, named and forgotten. The grass keeps their shape longer than stone did.
Davies recorded a burial ground here, consisting of an oval enclosure with a few headstones. No trace of this could be found. It was situated on top of a low, S-facing slope in rough pasture. The above description was derived from the 'Archaeological Survey of County Donegal. A description of the field antiquities of the County from the Mesolithic Period to the 17th century.' Compiled by: Brian Lacey with Eamon Cody, Claire Cotter, Judy Cuppage, Noel Dunne, Vincent Hurley, Celie O'Rahilly, Paul Walsh and Seán Ó Nualláin (Lifford: Donegal County Council, 1983). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated. Date of upload: 22 September 2008
