Mollaneen is a quiet Irish village where a square medieval font bowl appeared in the churchyard about 1855, its lip and shaft joint decorated but its support gone. People watched it sit among graves until it vanished without a trace. It may have been buried, broken or carried off, but the loss belongs to the village because the bowl once gave shape to water, memory and ritual.

The record is for the original location of a font. Swinfen (1992, 23) notes ‘About 1855 the bowl of a font was observed in the churchyard; it was square and ornamented with a moulding round the lip and also where it joined the shaft, though the shaft was missing. It was said to be of medieval type. There has been no sign of it for many years.’ The present location of the font is unknown. Compiled by: Mary Tunney Date of upload: 27 September 2017
