Font in Kiltiernan

Font

What is recorded here

Thirty centimetres of grey granite, narrow at the top and wide at the base, it holds less water than a cooking pot yet every child born within hearing of that slope was dipped in it. The funnel shape drinks the poured liquid instead of spilling it, as if the church itself were learning to remember each new life.
The church stands within a walled graveyard, located on the summit of a S facing slope. A granite font sits in the E window embrasure of the medieval church (DU026-020002-). The font is round, flat-bottomed with a funnel shaped interior (H 0.30m, max. Wth, 0.59m). Compiled by: Geraldine Stout and Padraig Clancy. Revised upload on: 14 April 2018.
