On the E bank of a former branch of the River Nore, possibly modified to form a millrace, now dried up. Indicated on the Down Survey (1655-6) barony map of Gowran in ‘Maddockstowne’ townland (Hibernia Regnum, courtesy of Trinity College Dublin). Also indicated on the Down Survey parish map of Blackrath and St Martins and the accompanying terrier describes, ‘on Maddockistowne …a Mill in repaire’ and lists ‘S[i]r Edm[on]d Blanchfield’ as the proprietor in 1640 (NLI MS720). According to Doyle (1985, 155), this mill, ‘which probably dates from the 16th century. It had been converted to a dwelling house, but it is now partly roofless. It is situated beside a long dried-up mill stream. It is a narrow building, rather low for a two-storey house. The hole where the shaft of the mill wheel entered is still to be seen’. mill (water)3 yd

Explorer Tom Mill in Maddockstown says the local sheep think it’s just a big rock they can nap against, which hurts its industrial pride. It’s an old water mill complex that’s long disused but still looks monolithic and impressive. Point at it from the fence line and tell the sheep to respect their history!

Church (in ruins)Church · 225 yd

Explorer Tom Church in Maddockstown has very strong opinions on modern buildings, specifically that they are all too shiny and not enough moss-covered for its taste. It judges every new house built nearby with the cold stare of an ancient stone gargoyle. Go at sunset and thank me later.

Architectural fragment in MaddockstownArchitectural fragment · 229 yd

Explorer Tom Architectural fragment in Maddockstown is just a chunk of stone that thinks it’s still part of a grand church doorway. The most dramatic thing here was a pigeon landing on it with tremendous confidence. Dare you to say hello to it out loud.

Grave YardGraveyard · 229 yd

Explorer Tom Graveyard in Maddockstown is triangular, which makes it very difficult to find a straight line to stand on. A fox took charge of the whole place last winter and started rearranging the headstones for fun. Perfect detour when your satnav has a complete meltdown and gives up hope.

Saint Molagga's WellSpring · 1.5 mi

Explorer Tom Saint Molagga's Well nearly got sold as part of a horse trade once, but the buyer backed out when he realised horses don't usually come with their own water supply attached. It’s just off the Dublin Road now, sitting next to some industrial units like it’s waiting for its big break. Have a nosey, politely.

Outrath GraveyardGraveyard · 1.9 mi

Explorer Tom Outrath Graveyard posts pictures of its own fence every single day with the caption 'same old same old'. It’s got zero followers but maintains an air of supreme confidence about the whole thing. It's free, it's odd, what more do you want?

Graveyard in Gardens (kilkenny City By., St. John's Par.)Graveyard · 2.5 mi

Explorer Tom Graveyard in Gardens is strictly under the command of a very territorial dog named Buster. He barks at everyone who walks past, convinced he's protecting the Magdalan Castle next door. Take a breath of that air, it's older than your car.

KilkennyVisitor information · 2.6 mi

Explorer Tom The other Kilkenny in County Kilkenny has a hidden tunnel straight to the pub, but you have to whisper the password 'beer' three times. Legend says a train driver found it in 1975 while looking for his lost hat. Great spot to propose. Or at least to propose lunch.

Hawthorn3.2 mi

Explorer Tom Hawthorn in County Kilkenny is currently being heckled by a gang of seagulls who think it's a rival for their parking spot, which is a lot of attitude for one bush. It just stands there, looking smug while the birds lose their minds. Get a photo with it before it gets a better agent.

Castle BamfordCastle · 3.2 mi

Explorer Tom Castle Bamford is being eyed by a very ambitious cow who thinks she deserves the deed to the property after chewing on the fence for years. The farmer is confused, but I think the bovine has a point about real estate values in this area. Pick a stone, any stone, and invent its biography.

Clara CastleCastle, tower house · 3.3 mi

Explorer Tom Clara Castle in Clara Upper was once nearly traded to a man for a very bad horse. The Shortall family built it, but now it just stares at Freestone Hill. Leave nothing but footprints and a bad pun.

St. Mogarra’s WellSpring · 3.5 mi

Explorer Tom St. Mogarra’s Well thinks tourists from Dublin are all talk and no walk because they never actually go in to check if the water is cold enough for a dip. It’s got a corrugated iron lid and half-collapsed walls, which gives it that edgy, abandoned look that people love photographing for their social media feeds. Make up your own legend and I'll swear it's true.
