What is recorded here

On the N-facing slope of Rathcroghan, around Carran fort (RO022-056023-), and part of the unified field system at Rathcroghan. An area of c. 11 ha (c. 27 acres) contains two rectangular enclosures (dims c. 15m x c. 8-16m) defined by slight scarps or banks are probably small fields just SW of the rath. A long NNE-SSW field bank just to their E extends off to the N where it truncated Carran Fort on the W side, while a curving NW-SE field bank is just to the NE of the rath. The rectangular enclosure (RO022-056021-) (dims c. 10m x c. 8m) defined by slight scarps is c. 100m W of the rath and connected with the long field banks. Geophysical testing of Caran Fort regards the field system as pre-dating the rath, and anomalies immediately S of the rath raise the possibility of metal-working in the area (Waddell et al. 2009, 51-2).
