What is recorded here

Fourteen hectares of forgotten geometry still shadow the soil at Ballinaltig, their rectangular and curvilinear lines crossing like abandoned thoughts. Ringforts and ditches sit inside the pattern, suggesting people lived within the design rather than beside it. The fields disappeared from memory but never stopped marking the land, waiting for rain or drought to draw them visible again.
Fragmented pattern of rectilinear and curvilinear cropmarks, some perpendicular to each other, visible in aerial photographs (CASAP, July 1989). Cropmarks cover c. 45ha and indicate relict field system. Some rectangular fields noted. Ringforts (CO024-012---; CO024-013---; CO024-014---), enclosure (CO024-208---) and ring-ditch (CO024-221---) all within field system. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
