What is recorded here
No visible trace survives on the Stradbally South rise, though a hidden underground passage still lies within the ghost of a thirty-three metre stone ring. The fort vanished beneath pasture and time, leaving behind an empty circle and a tunnel that may have served people, gods or imagination. What is certain is the shape: a ring around a chamber, buried but never forgotten.
On a rise in undulating pastureland. Redington (1912, 175) refers to a ‘circle of very large stones’ but she could not determine if ‘they had ever formed more than a single wall’. A Man-made underground passage (GA103-181001-) was centrally placed within the interior of the enclosure. McCaffrey (1952, 206) also noted the ‘Man-made underground passage and a surrounding ring of stones’ (diam. c. 33m) and he suggested that the ‘ring’ probably represented ‘one face of the surrounding wall’. No visible surface trace survives.

A stone ringfort in Stradbally South, likely dating to the early medieval period, is situated on a rise in undulating pastureland. Local tradition and early accounts associate it with fairy lore, while a man-made underground passage nearby suggests additional historical or ritual significance.
